Today is the day, when Mobile responsive sites will soar to the top of search results everywhere! And yes, 60% of them will be on cell phones. It’s been a long time coming and Google has drawn a line in the search sand.

On Tuesday, April 21, Google is turning their mobile search algorithm on it’s head. The algorithm will start favoring mobile-friendly websites (ones with large text, easy-to-click links, and that resize to fit whatever screen they’re viewed on) and ranking them higher in search. Websites that aren’t mobile-friendly will get demoted… hard.

About 60% of online traffic now comes from mobile and Google wants to ensure users will have a good experience whenever they click on a mobile link.

Google announced these changes during Feburary, giving us web repairers/makers at, nearly two months to prep and keep our clients’ sites from disappearing from mobile search results. Many in our industry expect the update to cause a big stir in the rankings. It has been nicknamed “Mobile-geddon” because the “apocalyptic” prediction for millions of websites. (cue Aerosmith in your mind…. and yes, if you don’t make changes, your clients will miss “quite many things”)

Google has always been about content relevancy but, just like all things Google, that is changing and will keep evolving. Content is still very important, but user experience is just as important. It is no longer sufficient to have all the right content — if people come to your site and the content is there but it’s not readable, well that’s not doing anyone any favors.

Both small and large businesses are going to be affected by mobile-geddon. All. Not all of this is bad news. Take it from me, I was born on 12.21!!! The former predicted apocalypse, this is not a hoax! If you have a mobile-responsive site, this is the time to stake your claim and jump ahead of your competitors. If you don’t, you should. We’re happy to be a resource for you. Feel free to join us for a free 1 hour workshop on this. We will have survival supplies. Experts and wine. =) April 29th at 7pm at the Union Cohort Working Space. 3919 30th Avenue. North Park. Bring your business cards. It will be a great learning and networking opportunity.
